Healthy Aging

Have you tried it yet? I’ve heard a lot about this supplement with Dr. Oz (from Oprah’s show and the You! books) recommending it lately and claiming that he takes it as part of his personal regime.

I just ordered a free sample of the resveratrol supplement from one of the many producers of this new product, Resveratrol Ultra. ***Update: 7-6-09***Watch out for resveratrol scams and questionable practices! I just learned that this company who offered the “free trial”, Resveratrol Ultra, charged my credit card for $87.13 for another bottle of this product without my authorization. They apparently have some hard-to-find information in the terms about automatically charging you for a monthly subscription after a short cancellation period. My credit card company actually called me to alert me, so they must be on the security division’s radar screen from complaints. They did, after I contacted their customer service and arranged for a return merchandise authorization to return the product, issue a credit to my credit card account. You may be better off to talk to your local health food store and purchase it locally from someone you trust. That’s certainly what I’ll do now.

It turns out that resveratrol is the main ingredient in red wine and other red-skinned berries that may have some outstanding anti-aging benefits. That may be part of the explanation for the “French women don’t get fat” phenomena…all that wine drinking is good for us! Cheers to that!

However, we’d have to drink thousands of glasses of wine daily to get the amount of resveratrol in the supplements. One of my favorite and most-trusted holistic medical doctors, Dr. Andrew Weil, is more conservative about the use and benefits of resveratrol supplements. He suggests you could switch to red wine instead, if you’re already a drinker. You can also eat more fruits and berries with red and purple skins, such as grapes, raspberries, blueberrries, cranberries, and blackberries. He cautions that since the supplements aren’t FDA approved, we don’t have studies on their purity and effectiveness.

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve tried resveratrol and what your experience has been! Please leave a comment on this post.
